Why we gather: the quiet power of a circle
What happens when we make room to listen, share and simply be together?
So much of everyday life asks us to keep going. To care for others, stay on top of things and have an answer when someone asks how we are. A circle offers a moment to pause and answer that question honestly, even if the answer is “I’m not really sure.”
What is a circle?
A circle is a facilitated gathering where people come together to reflect, listen and connect. At HELD, that might include a gentle arrival, a body awareness practice, a journalling prompt and time to share. There is always room to listen without speaking.
Gathering and sharing stories have long been part of human life. The circle gives us a simple way to make room for that connection today, without needing a special reason or having everything worked out first.
Being heard without being fixed
Sometimes what we need is time to put words to our experience and have someone listen. In a circle, we practise giving each other that space. We don’t need to offer advice, compare experiences or find the perfect response.
Hearing someone else name a feeling we recognise can help us feel less alone. We may begin to soften the pressure to be coping all the time, and find more compassion for ourselves and each other.
Bringing your body into the conversation
Reflection can include noticing what is happening in your body. You might become aware of your shoulders, the support of your chair or your need to change position. These small moments of attention are part of somatic awareness. Any invitation can be adapted or left out.
Making room for your changing needs
Within HELD Circle, cyclical and seasonal themes offer another way to reflect. What has your energy been like? Where have you needed more rest or connection? What are you ready to make space for? We approach these questions with curiosity, allowing each person’s experience to be different.
You don’t need to know what to say
Coming alone, feeling nervous or choosing to stay quiet are all welcome. There is no performance and no requirement to share a personal story. You can begin by simply being there.
For me, this is at the heart of HELD: making time for human connection, and creating a space where you can meet yourself with a little more care.
